Just one-in-three intercity rail services in Belgium are operating as the country’s transport workers stage a 24-hour walkout between 22:00 Sunday and the same time on Monday.
Luxembourg’s rail operator, CFL, warns travellers that cross-border services connecting Luxembourg with Gouvy and Arlon are also affected. The CFL website has a section dedicated to the strike and the timetable changes in effect.
Within Belgium, buses and flights face the same disruption, with Brussels Airlines (a Lufthansa subsidiary) reporting cancellations of up to half its European routes. Charleroi airport in Brussels is also dealing with long delays due to staff not coming to work from its external security partner company.
The strike centres on proposed social welfare and pensions reform in Belgium.
A demonstration expected to number at least 10,000 people is planned in Brussels and will be joined by staff from schools in Flanders, the post office and hygiene services.
Belgium remains without a government since elections in June. Strikers hope their concerns will be addressed during ongoing coalition negotiations.
