In office since 2013, former bus driver and trade unionist Maduro has clung to power through a mix of populism and repression, even as the United States imposed punishing sanctions on the key oil sector and the economy imploded.
Venezuela is to hold parliamentary elections this year, as well as a referendum on constitutional reform.
Last year, parliament passed a law punishing support for sanctions on Maduro’s regime by up to 30 years in prison.
