An urgent warning has been issued to British tourists as all airports in a popular European destination are likely to close.

The joint trade union front in Belgium is organising a national strike on Thursday, February 13 which is likely to cause massive disruption.

Belgium’s largest airport, Zaventem, has already announced it is expecting a significant impact on its operations because its handling agents and security personnel are participating in the strike en masse.

The Foreign Office issued the latest advice on Wednesday and said: “There will be a national transport strike in Belgium on 13 February.  Unions plan to strike on the 13th of every month until further notice.

“All Belgian airports will be closed on 13 February.  Bus and rail services will be severely limited throughout the entire country during the national strike.

“Eurostar services remain unaffected on 13 February.  Monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays.”

On Monday, Brussels Airport confirmed that no passenger flights will be departing at all.

The airport stated in a statement: “To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, we have decided, in consultation with the airlines, not to operate any departing passenger flights on 13 February.

“Airlines will contact passengers whose flights have been impacted. We ask passengers not to come to the airport on the day.”

All passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline or via the Brussels Airport website or app.

This is the second advice from the FCDO for Belgium over the last few days. Last week, the FCDO warned the tourists of possible terrorist attacks in the country.

The FCDO shared that “the main threat comes from extremists linked to Daesh, formerly known as ISIL”.

Holidaymakers were warned that potential attacks could strike “indiscriminately” across Belgium, including areas visited by tourists.

The FCDO warned: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.”
