Borussia Dortmund are at risk of missing out on European qualification in the Bundesliga, let alone the Champions League spots, but they can give themselves a confidence boost with a solid win over Union Berlin.
Dortmund started the weekend in 11th spot in the Bundesliga, six points adrift of the top six, and new manager Niko Kovac’s first two domestic features ended in defeat to Stuttgart and Bochum.
But Dortmund at least secured a spot in the Champions League last 16 with a 3-0 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon, having looked much more assured at the back over the two legs of that tie.
At Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday, they restricted Sporting to just one shot on target, although the visitors were missing Viktor Gyokeres.
Nonetheless Dortmund have shown enough to suggest they can keep the door shut in victory over Union Berlin, who have drawn blanks in four of their last seven Bundesliga contests.
Jonathan David should return for Lille for their high-profile clash with Monaco in Ligue 1 on Saturday but there is another forward for punters to keep an eye on at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Former Arsenal youth product Mika Biereth joined Monaco from Sturm Graz in January and he is already his club’s top scorer in the league.
That is thanks to two hat-tricks this month, the first coming in a 4-2 win over Auxerre and the second in the 7-1 hammering of Nantes.
He has settled into life in Ligue 1 well and, playing in a Monaco side who should operate on the front foot, he is a worthwhile anytime goalscorer pick this weekend.
