Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) and Electricité de France (EDF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to outline a long-term partnership in energy transition and low-carbon technology. The agreement aims to establish a framework for cooperation on hydropower development and other renewable energy projects in Montenegro.

The MoU focuses on creating new hydroelectric power plants to enhance Montenegro’s energy security, using best practices in environmental protection and sustainable development. EPCG and EDF will work together as strategic partners, with EDF contributing as a designer, co-investor, and operator in the projects.

Milutin Đukanović, President of EPCG’s Board, emphasized the potential of hydropower for Montenegro’s growth and expressed optimism about the collaboration with EDF. EPCG’s executive director, Ivan Bulatović, highlighted the MoU’s alignment with the company’s commitment to renewable energy and praised the partnership with one of Europe’s leading energy firms.

EDF’s Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Marc Girard, noted that this collaboration follows discussions between Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and EDF officials in France earlier this year. Both companies have since worked to solidify plans for joint energy projects.

Montenegro’s Energy Minister, Saša Mujović, expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential to deliver significant results, while Prime Minister Spajić hailed the progress made since the initial meeting in Paris, underscoring Montenegro’s hydroelectric potential and growing interest from international partners.

The French Ambassador to Montenegro, Anne-Marie Maskay, also congratulated both teams, reinforcing the broader cooperation between France and Montenegro across various sectors, including energy.

Future projects under the agreement could extend beyond hydropower to include large-scale photovoltaic installations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and green hydrogen, supporting grid flexibility and the integration of renewable energy sources.
