Vilnius made a mistake by spoiling relations with Belarus. This was stated by MEP Waldemar Tomaszewski.

“One very big provocation began in 2020, after these elections… We now see that it was a mistake in our policy — we ourselves spoiled these relations…The border is closed. People face difficulties, they can’t go to the funeral, there are queues for three days. We should not close the checkpoints, we should open them more,” he said.

In his opinion, if the Lithuanian authorities had acted differently, they would even have been able to avoid the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict.

“We are to blame for supporting this revolution and thereby creating a new border between Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Maybe there would have been no conflict, because a new thousand-kilometer border line appeared, and (the beginning of SMO —EADaily) was provoked. Maybe someone needs this conflict, people are dying, and someone is doing business,” Tomashevsky said.

In this regard, he called for “urgent decisions” to establish normal relations with Belarus.

Recall that relations between Lithuania and Belarus deteriorated sharply after 2020. Vilnius did not recognize the results of the presidential elections in the neighboring republic and supported the radical opposition. After the start of SMO, the policy of the Lithuanian authorities towards Belarus became openly aggressive.
