(JB) Luxembourg’s immigration minister is to meet with Serbian immigration representatives after the country received a further 70 asylum applications this week.
According to Luxembourg radio station RTL, Nicolas Schmit said that the message needed to be made clearer that the chances of Serbian applicants receiving asylum in Luxembourg are very low.
He explained that it was discouraging for people to come to Luxembourg and to then have to return to their country of origin.
Because of the recent financial troubles across Europe, Luxembourg has seen a rapid rise in EU residents from financially beleaguered countries including Greece and Portugal travelling to the Grand Duchy for work.
The minister accepted such legal movements as “normal”, adding that Luxembourg itself was also suffering in the financial crisis.
