Melting glaciers force Swiss and Italians to redraw border

Switzerland and Italy are preparing to change their national borders as melting Alpine glaciers have altered their historically established frontier.

The Swiss government has approved changes to the border running beneath the Matterhorn, one of Europe’s highest mountains, which separates the Zermatt region from the Valle d’Aosta in Italy. “Significant sections of the border are defined by the watershed or ridge lines of glaciers, firn [granular] or perpetual snow,” the Swiss government said. “These formations are changing due to the melting of glaciers.”

Swiss glaciers lost 4 per cent of their volume last year because of climate change. The area affected by the changes is that of the Zermatt ski resort, where hikers and skiers can cross freely between Switzerland and the Valtournenche valley in
