Lokrum

National Geographic has recently unveiled its list of the Europe’s six best secret beaches, with a Croatia topping the list.

No. 1 on the list is Lokrum Island, which is just a 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik’s bustling Old Town port, offering a serene escape from the city’s crowds.

National Geographic writes that Lokrum Island, a UNESCO-protected reserve, is renowned for its verdant pine forests and free-roaming peacocks. The island offers several swimming spots, with the Mrtvo More (Dead Sea) lagoon being the standout.

This saltwater lagoon, created by tectonic activity and erosion, is connected to the Adriatic Sea via an underwater passage. Surrounded by jagged rock formations, the calm waters of Mrtvo More are ideal for swimming.

“Visitors can sunbathe on the flat rocks before enjoying a swim in the clear waters, accompanied by the island’s inquisitive peacocks,” National Geographic writes.
