Vodafone Group, the UK-based telecommunications giant with operations in around 150 countries but best-known for its mobile phone networks in 60 countries, has committed to open its new European logistics hub in Luxembourg.
The hub will be built at Bettembourg, just south of the Luxembourgish capital, on the main rail and road routes towards France. It will start to take shape from early 2025 and be ready to open in 2026, the company says.
The facility will store and distribute essential equipment like antennas and routers, which CEO Luka Mucic says will be able to reach 88% of Vodafone’s European warehouses within 24 hours, making Luxembourg an ideal location for the centralised hub. Mucic made his comments while in Luxembourg signing the deal, alongside Lex Delles, minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism.
The hub will be a new approach for Vodafone, which currently operates such activities in each individual country.
Vodafone already employs 400 people in Luxembourg, where it has several offices, including its procurement company. Although the company is a major employer, there is no Vodafone mobile network in Luxembourg. Instead the company has a strategic partnership with Tango.
Bettembourg is a major logistics hub for Luxembourg and the Greater Region, as it lies at the junction between the A3 and A13 motorways, as well as on the confluence of at least three rail routes. The multimodal freight terminal opened in 1979 and the high-tech logistics park was formally opened in 2018, after several stages of construction in previous years.
Vodafone’s 26,000-square-metre premises, developed by MG Real Estate, will join hundreds of other businesses at the rail-motorway hub which advertises itself as having good connections to places as diverse as Turkey and Scandinavia.
“The creation of a new pan-European logistics hub in Luxembourg is in line with our strategy to simplify the way we run Vodafone and our commitment to being as cost-efficient as possible in our operations and supply chain,” Mucic said in a press release. “This investment will also reinforce Luxembourg’s position as a world-class logistics centre.”
Aiming for sustainability certification, Vodafone plans to use sustainable materials and invest in carbon-cutting technology in its new building, which will be managed by its in-house procurement company.
