In November, Serbia will begin organized screening for the early detection of lung cancer. Serbia will become the first country in the Western Balkans to diagnose the disease in this way, it was announced today at a press conference at the Pulmonology Clinic.

It was noted that in Serbia, around 7,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, and over 5,000 die from the disease.

Nebojša Tasić, an advisor to the Minister of Health for prevention, said that Serbia ranks second in Europe in the number of lung cancer cases and deaths, but those numbers can change since lung cancer, like some other diseases, can be curable if detected early. He added that screening and prevention are closely linked because screening is the starting point of prevention, and early diagnosis is the key to success.

The recommendation is for high-risk individuals—those over 50 and long-time smokers—to participate in the screening first, Tasić said, adding that all other categories should eventually be included as well.

Mihailo Stjepanović, director of the Pulmonology Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Serbia, stated that for now, the Pulmonology Clinic has optimal conditions to organize early lung cancer screening for citizens of Belgrade. If public interest is high, other clinics will be included as well.
