Camping in Finland also increased, the country’s statistics agency reports.

Last summer holidaymakers from Finland clearly preferred visiting neighbouring countries rather than ones in southern Europe, according to Statistics Finland.

In particular, Sweden and Estonia attracted the most tourists from Finland, while trips to Norway also increased compared to 2023, the agency said.

Last summer people in Finland made a total of 2.9 million visits to foreign countries. More than half of those trips (1.6 million) were made to Nordic countries or Estonia. Meanwhile, trips to Sweden increased by five percent, year on year, last summer.

“There were ten times more trips to Nordic countries than last summer, while the number of trips to southern Europe decreased by the same amount. As an example, there were more trips made to Norway than to Spain or Greece,” the agency’s chief statistician Marianne Laalo said in a press release.

The number of journeys to Estonia did not change, but there were fewer overnight trips to Finland’s Baltic neighbour. At the same time, day trips on ferries to Estonia increased by nearly 40 percent, while travel to Norway increased by the same amount, compared to the summer of 2023.

Domestic tourism

Tourism within Finland also increased in the summer, compared to last year. Overnight leisure trips in the country grew in nearly all of the country’s regions, according to Statistics Finland.

The agency recorded around 7.8 million domestic leisure trips that included cost-free accommodation (camping) grew by more than 15 percent during May-August, compared to the same period in 2023.

The agency said camping reached a height of popularity in 2021, when around 9.8 million camping trips were made.
