19-year-old Tenishia Thornton has emerged as the new Junior European Champion, earning yet another gold for herself and her country.

In a thrilling showcase of strength and perseverance at the Warsaw championships, Tenishia kicked off the Snatch event with a jaw dropping 86kg, but soon baffled spectators, judges and fellow athletes alike by lifting a jaw dropping 89kg in her second attempt, securing her first gold of the day.

Tensions rose at the Clean and Jerk portion, as her first attempt saw her lifting an impressive 107kg, but was outmatched by her competitors who bumped her down to fourth.

However, in a dramatic final attempt, she summoned every ounce of strength and lifted a whopping 112kg, sweeping the competition and securing yet another gold.

With a victorious roar and an abundance of cheers, it was evident that the young athlete was on her way to the top at the overall standings.

With her initial 89kg and second 112kg, her total amounted the 201kg, a mere seven kilograms more than the Spanish lifter, who placed second, evidently landing Thornton at the number one spot in the totals, earning the final gold of the day.

With three golds around her neck the lifter not only secured the title of Junior European Weightlifting Champion, but also set a new impressive national record!

Earlier this week, Kim Camilleri Lagana seized another historic moment for Malta at the Warsaw Championships by achieving the first medals for Malta in the under-20s category.

A big well done to Tenishia and the coaches at Malta weightlifting association, who were supported by Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta, further aiding in lifting up young athletes to high ranks internationally.
