A year after PepsiCo removed brominated vegetable oil (BVO) from Gatorade, Coca-Cola confirmed that it began removing the controversial ingredient from Powerade
BVO is a stabilizing ingredient that evenly distributes flavorings in liquid drinks, but it’s also a flame retardant that’s already been banned in drinks in Japan and Europe. According to the Associated Press, BVO became the subject of major criticism after a Mississippi teenager started petitions to remove it from Gatorade and Powerade. Teen Sarah Kavanagh went after the two beverages because they are marketed to athletes who have to be extra careful about what they eat and drink.
A year after its biggest competitor made the change, Coca-Cola quietly started selling Powerade bottles that are “BVO-free.” Fruit punch and strawberry lemonade flavors without the ingredient were sold in Detroit, Omaha, New York, and Washington D.C. — the first cities to get the changed beverage. The company will slowly phase out the controversial ingredient in all of its Powerade products.
