In our new series, Flashback Fridays, we take a look at our favorite blast-from-the-past foods—still living, some long dead. Cue the nostalgia.
Many moons ago, an elementary school friend and I convinced my dad to buy us a case of Mountain Dew Pitch Black during a probably-annoying-for-him trip to Publix. We were having a sleepover and needed to stay up as late as possible, obviously. My older brother was in a weird Bawls energy drink phase, but it just seemed too aggressive a caffeine level for our 10-year-old bodies to take. For some reason, grape-flavored Dew was deemed the better option, and my saint of a father signed off on it.
And you know what? It was delicious. As someone who was routinely chided for my love of grape-flavored things—yes, I know it doesn’t taste like an actual grape, whatever!—I was here for the added hint of citrus. And it probably helped Lucy and I stay awake until at least midnight, so like, a win all around.
Now, the beauty of a 10-year-old palate is that literally anything with 75 grams of sugar will taste good. In that same vein, I was not bothered that the name didn’t quite correspond with the color. I just appreciated it for what it is and the raging sugar high it gave me.
Like Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts and Little Bite Muffins, this is one of those foods that should probably stay in my youthful memories. However, I’m not the only one who holds a fondness in their heart for this syrupy purple soda. A quick Twitter search tells me people have been very inquisitive about Pitch Black in the last month, mostly because it seems to be fading from the gas station shelves it once took over.
After its inception as a limited-edition Halloween drink in 2004, Pitch Black was seen in stores off and on, with reappearances in 2011 and 2016. A few stragglers still carried it as of late, with people seeing it at local gas stations or grocery stores, according to the Twitter and Reddit threads I lurked. As recently as this week, Mountain Dew confirmed it’s not totally out of commission, though they did acknowledge it’s not as widely available anymore. It’s also been seen in slushie form in the last few months, which seems important.
So…there you have it. Everything you didn’t ask to know about my former love, Mountain Dew Pitch Black. It’s been a wild ride.
