Combat sports and martial arts encompass a wide range of disciplines with unique technical, tactical, and physical demands. Despite their growing popularity and recognition within the sports science community, there remains a need for further research focusing on the optimization of performance, injury prevention, and athlete monitoring. The recent inclusion of combat sports and martial arts as a dedicated research category within the European College of Sports Science reflects the growing academic interest in these disciplines. With diverse physical, technical, and psychological components, combat sports present a complex area for study. Given the dynamic nature of combat sports, there is a pressing need to explore innovative training strategies, monitoring techniques, and methodologies that account for their unique demands. The integration of evidence-based approaches into these sports will not only support athlete performance but also promote safe practice, effective recovery, and long-term athlete development.

This Research Topic aims to consolidate current knowledge and foster new advancements that can be directly applied in training and competition. The goal is to bring together cutting-edge research on methodologies that enhance performance, improve conditioning, manage health, and prevent injuries. We encourage submissions that present practical approaches and scientific rigor, providing valuable insights for coaches, practitioners, and researchers in combat sports and martial arts.

We welcome contributions that explore both established and novel methodologies for performance enhancement, injury prevention, and athlete monitoring in combat sports and martial arts. Manuscripts may include, but are not limited to, topics such as;

– Strength and conditioning paradigms (e.g., HIIT, plyometrics, concurrent training)
– Performance analysis (both sports-wide and athlete-centered)
– Practical applications for coaches (periodization, recovery protocols and skill development)
– Emerging technologies (wearables, virtual reality)
– Exercise physiology
– Biomechanics
– Psychological aspects influencing performance.

We are interested in article-types including original research, systematic reviews (with or without meta-analyses), case studies, and position statements. By addressing these themes, we aim to contribute to the advancement of research that holds practical relevance for the global combat sports community.
