Both Germany and France have been through political turmoil in the past week. French parliamentarians ousted Michel Barnier as Prime Minister after a vote of no confidence. Now center-left politician François Bayrou is in the role, but his position is incredibly tenuous.
In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz also lost a confidence vote, triggering a snap election as the uneasy coalition he headed collapsed.
These fragile leadership moments come at a strange time for Europe. Many leaders are apprehensive or excited about the return of an emboldened President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, while the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza and Ukraine are causing concern.
