We’ve all worked long hours, dreaded weekend work, and encountered unforeseen deadlines that knocked our personal lives off track. Recently, an Indian lawyer working in Europe made a comparison of the work cultures in other countries and India. The lawyer not only expressed her dissatisfaction with the Indian work environment but also pointed out how the country lags behind in several aspects.
She discussed the stark difference between the work cultures in Europe and India. She wrote, “Have been in Europe for 6 months now & have started building up a resentment towards work culture in India. You work past 12 AM on a daily basis, only to earn peanuts & not be respected as an individual. You have no time for yourself. How have we been living like this?”

In the following post, she stated that European culture had shortcomings. But, she felt unfairly treated and cheated after moving and noticing how India could have done much better. She added, “I see what life could have been in India if we just had cleaner air, safer roads, just better access to basic facilities. I’d take that over Blinkit/Zomato any day.”
Her comparison struck a chord with many people, especially those who lived overseas before returning to India. A user stated, “Developing vs developed. It’s all about the numbers. We are on survival mode here always. Elsewhere people get to live.”
“When you step out, you realize how deeply ingrained the hustle mindset is back home. it’s not just about work; it’s how the whole system runs.”
An individual pointed out that work culture depends on various other factors. “That depends on the team, place and your experience. While I was in the UK/US, I did work weekends and long hours at the start same as India. As I gained experience, I didn’t have to do that. Overall, I worked less hours in India overtime, than in the UK/US,” said the user.
Some people also shared their personal experiences. A user mentioned, “I’ve been in Australia for the past 5 years and no matter how lonely some days only can get, I have to remind myself how messed up the work and life culture and nuance is in India! And I’m not against hard work or hustle, just against daily exploitation as a culture!”
